The original vellum wrapper had failed entirely and the sewing had broken across three gatherings. The register was resewn on new linen tapes through the original sewing holes wherever they survived, then rounded, backed, and covered in full crimson morocco over new boards sized to protect the deckle edges of the register leaves.
The brief specifically asked that no leaf be trimmed and no repair be invisible under magnification — the parish wanted a book that could still be read as a historical object, not one restored into looking new.
